No supercharging or turbocharging or even nitrous oxide was necessary for this NHRA Factory Hot Rods drag racing class.

After domination by the Chrysler Hemi engine powered cars within the first 2 years (1970-72) big blocks were outlawed in favor of small block configurations. By 1982 the NHRA limited the cubic inch class rule to 500 cui to curb the take over by the mountain motors of unlimited size, that were fast becoming popular and out running the competition and budgets of the average working class drag racer. This in turn saw the return of the big block motors.
